MAJA KAREN (1984) moves on the edge of reality in her simultaneously raw and poetic photographs. Her images are charged with conflicting signals, which blur the typologies of culture and tradition. The images are often populated by indefinable masked models, stripped of personality. The models’ purpose is to charge the pictorial space – empowering a celebration of texture, material, colour and form. They become uniform individuals, framing the deliberate simplicity of the the images’ composition and creating room for emotional complexity.
Maja Karen is interested in the notion of personality dissociated from the eyes or facial features. Her work is characterised stylistically by minimalism cleverly combined with a distinctive sense of movement and composition. She often works in a series. She considers her work as story telling. Her pieces create a tension between the intuitive and the enlightened by exploring contrast in the foreground subject and the negative void unfolding in the background.
Maja Karen is currently based in Copenhagen.
